Prym Crochet Hook Review

I used the same hooks FOREVER. When I first started crocheting, I used an aluminum set that I used for 7 or 8 years until my fiancé gave me a set of Clover hooks for my birthday. Since then I have almost exclusively used my Clover Amour Hooks and only occasionally pick up the aluminum hooks

I have decided that I need to branch out and try new hooks because there are so many good ones out there! First up are the ergonomic hooks by Prym! I have seen tons of creators raving about Prym hooks so I decided to give them a try!

Let’s see if I add Prym to my hook rotation!

If you have any recommendations for hooks to review in the future let me know! I am @crochetwithkathryn on Instagram and TikTok.

What drew me to Prym?

I am always looking for crochet supplies that will help improve my hand health so I can crochet when I am old. While scrolling through social media, I saw so many creators I love using chunky hooks with a diamond pattern on them. At first I didn’t really notice, but as time went on they were coming up on my feed more and more (no ads, I just noticed so many people had and used them). I decided to do some research on ergonomic hooks and low and behold there they were! The hooks I was seeing everywhere!

I found a set on Amazon and noticed they were less expensive than other ergonomic crochet hook sets, so I bought them!

I bought the set with my own money. This is not an ad, just my honest opinion of this set.

The set contains a 3.5mm, 4.0mm, 4.5mm, 5.0mm and 6.0mm hook

I paid $28.76 (with tax) for the set

The link to the exact set I bought is here.

Testing

My plan is to use a Prym hook for a large project and pay attention to a couple of things:

– how my hands feel

– how easily the hook maneuvers the yarn

– how comfortable it is to hold

I have decided to make a sweater with some thrifted yarn I was gifted from a friend. I have yet to keep a sweater for myself so this will be my first! A sweater (as you probably know) takes a long time and is the largest project I am willing to take on at the moment. I am so excited to get started!

I will be testing the 4.0mm hook as the ombre yarn is a thinner weight.

Using the Hook

Immediately, I noticed that the hook is made of plastic. At first while using it I noticed the yarn was catching on the end of the hook because there was a tiny piece of rough plastic. I did nothing to pull the rough bit of plastic off but after a while it was worn down and the yarn was gliding off of the hook nicely

Because the hook is made of plastic, it is lighter than the hook that I am used to using (Clover Amour Hooks). It took some time to adjust to however once I got used to the weight, I loved using the hook

Another thing I noticed is the hook is thicker than other ergonomic hooks I have used thus far. I have a problem with gripping the hooks I use very tightly which leads to hand and arm pain but I noticed I could not grip the Prym hooks like I usually do. As the hours passed using this hook, I noticed my grip changing for the better. Overall, I had less pain and discomfort when crocheting! This fact alone makes me love this hook! I crochet A LOT and have for years and every time I have tried to adjust my grip, I have always reverted back to my old ways. I think using this hook for a long time will permanently change my grip and future me will be grateful

Completing the Project

I felt at ease using this hook and was pleased that my project ended up looking very neat with even stitches. I believe that no matter the tools, someone can make extraordinarily beautiful projects but I think nice materials definitely help. The Prym hooks were a delight to use and the way the yarn glides on the hook is very smooth contributing to the even stitches.

I love this yarn and the sweater was very easy to complete! I highly recommend crocheting this sweater by erin b. if you have a chance! I believe this sweater is going to be a staple in my closet for a long time. I still have many cakes of this yarn left and I think it would make a GREAT Raglan sweater with cascading ombre colors. Im getting excited just thinking about it!

Anyway… back to the hooks!

The ombre yarns is a gradient between a dark teal, white, pink, and purple

Summary

Overall, I loved these hooks. Below is a summarized list of my observations and thoughts while using the hook:

Pros:

– Light

– Wider than other ergonomic hooks (aka Clover Amour)

– Helps with crochet discomfort/pain

– Comfortable to use after a brief adjustment period

Cons:

– When I first used it there was a rough piece of plastic which prevented yarn from gliding on the hook

– Takes some adjustment to use

Final Thoughts

I love these Prym hooks and I will be adding these to my regular hook rotation!

I am a loyalist when it comes to my hooks but reviewing the Prym hooks is changing my mind! I loved trying new materials and want to do this more in the future. If you have any recommendations for materials I should try and review I would love to hear them!
